Nobody tips like a cow.

The question most asked at a Television or Film Production company that is also the MOST anticipated is, "What's fer lunch?"  It's true.  At some shows I've worked on, say for A&E with the "talent" closely resembling an aging singer from a once very popular boy band and an ex-playboy centerfold that would give a used bar rag a run for it's money, the aforementioned "lunch" question would come up very early on in the day.  "Hey so, has anyone thought about lunch?" (and it's 9:45am)... you get the picture.  Depending on the weather, the overall "feel" of the crowd and if anyone had gone out the night before, a very careful list of all time favorites that were within walking distance would be rattled off.  After several weeks of the same 5 places, a person gets a little tired of the same old - same old.  It was on that show that Becca and I decided to start really putting some thought into, what became and still remains our favorite meal of the day (Thanksgiving dinner not included).

The most recent doorway to be darkened by our presence was "Tipsy Cow".  "Tipsy Cow" you say?  Yes.  "Tipsy Cow".

It could really have so many meanings and different for different folks.  I carefully inspected the menu and we ventured out.  Since the weather was picturesque Southern California after a rain, we decided to temp fate and sit outside. Their website is photographed beautifully with just the right color saturation here and there.

Here's what they're about," The Tipsy Cow is an eclectic urban eating house specializing in freshly ground burgers, delectable craft cocktails, and the most interesting beers in town. Although our kitchen serves an assorted array of superior California cuisine, including creamy blue crab dip, tarragon deviled eggs, and short-rib poutine fries, the centerpiece of our menu is the burger."

Yep, all true.  They have 32 beers to choose from and "hand crafted" cocktails... "hand crafted" in my opinion, is an over used "clickie" dining buzz word that should just be removed from existence. The only other "con" that I can comment on is the service, although attentive, they seem to lack simple service etiquette. For example, when a dessert that is split between a hot, caramel sauce smothered Banana Foster Bread pudding and a cold accompaniment of Vanilla Bean ice cream, is plopped in the center of the table without as much as a stick to eat it with or a reassuring, "I'll be right back with spoons" and then you wait, patiently as the hot is getting cold and the cold is melting... little things like that. I have to wonder... do they even care or, do they even know?

My idiosyncrasies aside, the food and comfortable, pleasantly - audible atmosphere made up for it.

I opened the menu and was immediately drawn to BLUE CHEESE TOTS (YES, wrapped in bacon).

Then reading, reading... always reading, my eyes moved up the print to BASIL HUMMUS then took a dive to BURGERS.  Not an eater of the bovine for a number of years I landed on a non-Moo selection of Turkey Burger with provolone, avocado, butter lettuce, roasted tomato and basil aioli. It was exactly what I needed at that moment in time.  What followed, unfortunately I can only show you the carnage that we left behind.

A brilliant separation of flavor closely followed the union of texture and a full blown mouth-party. Quite fantastic.

We will be going back.

Enjoy!

Summer comes 'round again.

As the evenings get warmer and the crickets song helps even the busiest of brains lull off to dreamland, I realize that it's summer, again. We barely had a winter here on the mountain and spring was about two full weeks, maybe.  Gardens are taking hold and my zuch plants are soon to overtake everything else in a matter of days. Summer to me means grilling pretty much everything, every day to keep the heat out of the kitchen. Working in the shop kitchen for hours on end this time of year is not just exhausting but dehydrating! What are some of your favorite things to grill?  Do you prefer marinates or dry rubs?  Do you wrap your baked potatoes in foil on the grill or just plop them directly on the grill (well olive oiled of course)? Then there are the summer desserts... fresh berries, stone fruit, homemade ice cream.  One of my go to sweet treats is this peach and citrus sour cream cake.  (recipe at the end of this entry). Of course the star of easy summertime fo...

The Winter Blues

There's that weird period of time between January 1st and Valentine's Day I will classify as "The Winter Blues".  You're still recovering from the holiday rush and have that "I've forgotten something" feeling in the back of your mind, daily, since you aren't going somewhere for a party, preparing for a party or cleaning up after a party. The reality is, you have no deadlines and no one is dropping by at 7AM to pick up that Chocolate Peppermint Torte for their New Year's Eve celebration.  It's quiet.   Rainy (and or snow depending on where you live). The vibrant colors of the holidays, the reds, the golds, the greens have all faded to a light greyish-blue. How do I beat the Winter Blues you might be asking yourself?  I cook things that make ME happy (potato tacos).  This is the time of year I do most of my recipe testing for upcoming cooking demonstrations or private classes I teach.  Most will show up in the next co...

Summer 2017... It's A Wrap!

Although it's topping 114ºF here in Shadow Hills, CA over this long, last-kick-at-Summer holiday weekend, I can't help wishing for that first sign of Fall.  Snuggly sweaters, big fuzzy socks, heavily spiked Hot Cocoa... mmmm, I can just taste it! When we were kids, the end of Summer was always marked by the Jerry Lewis Telethon (was it possible to stay up all night?), shopping for the last bits of things needed to start the new school year and one final Cook Out before Dad would cover up the grill and wheel it back into the garage until next Summer. There were always people visiting at one time or another over Labor Day weekend.  Friends coming back from Holiday up in Cottage Country would stop in, knowing full well the grill would be fired up, ice cold beer in the cooler and that final cannon ball into the pool before they head back to their respective homes in the City.    Man, I think back and smile. Remembering. SNAP OUT OF IT J...
